Very late in the season to see a Copperhead out. These snakes are pit vipers. They are poisonous and their bite can be fatal. It usually involves major tissue damage without treatment. My youngest son was bitten by one. He was hospitalized a couple days, had some pain, nausea and itched like crazy but suffered no other damage ... thank goodness! This is the business end of pure nasty! At almost 3 feet long (31 inches) this is larger than most copperheads I've seen but some are much larger.

Must've been warm-ish today! They're beautiful snakes, if that's all you consider.
I love snakes, though I have a healthy respect for venomous ones. I've had a couple of different types of constrictors as pets in the past.

I've heard that before! LOL. I've also had an iguana, chinchillas, rats, a tarantula..other "normal" pets.

Thanks brownbear. I grew up around copperheads and have a very healthy respect for them. I try never to get too close if I see them Thanks les. We have copperheads, rattle snakes, and the water moccasin, all three pit vipers and the very small coral snake which is actually a member of the cobra family but so small that it's difficult for them to get a good bite on you. We have many non poisonous snakes from tiny 'ring neck' black snakes to pythons and boas now. The exotics are being let loose in our sub tropical area like the everglades of Florida. None of the latter two around my area.

Fascinating creatures but glad we only have one venomous species and that isn't particularly dangerous, even if you found one (they are VERY timid)

Copperheads are not aggressive, but they don't back off either. Their habit is to coil up in a striking position and hope you go away. Problem is, you don't always see them until they're chewing on ankle ... an' that's bad.
