This little guy has been digging in the sand. Probably getting ready to go 'underground' for the winter. A warm day must have brought him out for a little sunshine.

I've never seen one here out of the water (except on a log IN the water).

These are 'dry land' critters. They're not a turtle at all. I think more closely akin to the tortoises. They can go into water, but they live on dry land, sometimes far away from any permanent source of water. In winter they burrow into the ground and hibernate, or at least go dormant till spring. This one was cute because it was so small. It's about the diameter of a tennis ball. They are usually much bigger this time of year sort of large saucer diameter. They got the name 'box turtle' because they look like a turtle and EVERY kid, at some point has kept one in a box in his/her room as a pet.
