These small puffballs are 'Gem Studded Puffballs'. When young, white and firm inside they are edible and pretty good. Later, the pulp turns violet or brown and 'PUFFFS' when squashed or disturbed. (for size, they do get a little larger than this one) This one is at a perfect stage for harvesting.

I have giant puff balls come up in my garden last had puffed before getting (taste like eggs)

Thank you froglady, les, I like to take a large slice of the giant puffballs and just brown them in butter in a skillet. Looks like a slice of toast. (Add a little minced garlic for flavor).
