Bloodroot has long been used locally as a wormer for dogs. The root is dug, cut into bits, dried and put in the dogs food. Currently it is used or added as a supplement to treat some cancers in dogs, mostly external ulcerous ones or skin tags. Here is the very pretty blossom of a blood root plant. (Apologies for forgetting to get a good photo of the leaf) When cut, broken or injured, the sap oozes from the stem, leaf or root and has a reddish resemblance to blood oozing from a wound. Here is a typical root. And finally the cross section of a broken root. It's easy to see how it got its name. Since I dug this root for illustration, it will be used. I'll chop it, dry it and use it to worm Gracie. I won't encourage anyone else to do this with out consulting your vet. I personally used this on a number of dogs while growing up back on the farm. I am convinced that it is safe but again I urge anyone to learn more before using ANY 'home remedy' seen anywhere online.
