I started a Monarch Butterfly, honeybee, hummingbird garden a couple of years ago. I had wonderful results with a patch of buckwheat planted for the honeybees last season. Sadly, there are no honeybees this year ... BUT ... yesterday a beautifully bright Monarch Butterfly showed up on the milkweed I have cultivated for them. It stayed for some time visiting one leaf after another. I'm hoping it was laying eggs. I'll be looking on the plants and watching for caterpillars soon. I've long been fascinated with the migration of something as fragile as a butterfly over thousands of miles of territory. It's still beyond me that the Monarch can make this monumental journey. Here this Monarch appears to be laying eggs on the underside of a milkweed leaf. Oviposition of eggs by Monarch Butterflies is common on the leaves of milkweed.
