Lots of honey bees live in one hive or tree. They are communal, like ants. Honey bees are among the very top insects which pollinate our plants and flowers. In recent years the honey bee numbers have decreased drastically. I am doing plantings to help provide them with good sources of pollen which they convert to honey. To further help, I've started building 'nests' for solitary bees like the Mason Bee and the Leaf Cutter Bee. They pollinate too. With a good nest or 'house' provided, more will be attracted to my area. This is not to abandon my efforts with honeybees but to add to or enhance pollination capabilities for ALL the bees. It rained all day Thursday so I built this bee hut. I plan to build a nicer one for next year, but this may do for the rest of this season. If you look closely you'll notice different size holes drilled in the blocks. This is for different sized bees. Each species will have a diameter hole that it prefers. The be hut should also face East or South East as the bees seem to like the warmth of the morning sun. [/url[/url
