Apart from being a delicious treat, Hericium erinaceus (also called lion's mane mushroom, monkey head mushroom, bearded tooth mushroom, satyr's beard, bearded hedgehog mushroom, pom pom mushroom, or bearded tooth fungus) is an edible and medicinal mushroom belonging to the tooth fungus group. It has been tested and found to contain many cancer fighting properties and also is capable of promoting peripheral nerve regeneration after injury. These claims are not fable or fraudulent. Actual extracts are being used to treat actual cases. Since this one was on my way back out of the woods I left it. If I had found another or two I would have harvested enough for dinner. These are exceptionally good table fare. I only found the one, so I did not disturb it.

That one is well worth the research. I'll definitely be keeping a lookout for this one. Looks like its growing in dead leaf areas.......lots of those places on my acre. One really brushy tree covered area in one corner. Great information.

froglady, it grows on wood. Often dead or decaying wood but sometimes on living trees as well. The one pictured is about the size of a tennis ball. It's growing on a dead branch about the size of your wrist in diameter. This was early morning, cloudy and very dark in the woods. I did take 3 or 4 pics, this was the best I could do.
