I think today's nut, the Hickory nut is the last I have growing here at Brooks unless you count acorns.I do have a Beech or two but not big enough to bear. I do hope someday to have a large patch of Hazel Nuts (filberts), pecans and English walnuts. These hickory nuts were very wet when I picked them up. I laid them out in the sun to dry and some cracked themselves! Still had to use the hammer to get at the meat. Hickory nuts grow in a thick tough shell that is segmented lengthwise into four sections. I should have picked up some shells for this set but it was earlier in the fall and I didn't know I'd need them. Hickory nuts in their hard shell. Again, you need a hammer to crack these. Hickory nuts are delicious, one of my favorites! Squirrels like them too. Usually by the time you get a cup full of kernels, you'll have sore fingers Gracie thought the Hickory nuts were great!
