Hearts A Bustin' may get that name from the way the sort of heart shape seed pod bursts open to expose the bright orange seeds. Another name for the bush is Strawberry bush, probably for the spiky seed pod itself. Latin name Euronymous americanus. It can be grown in shaded areas of your garden for a very pleasing effect and birds will eat the berries. They are not recommended for eating raw by humans. The plant is a strong medicinal however. This bush makes a very nice ornamental as the branches stay a very nice shade of green year round. It's pretty even after the leaves have shed. It reminds me of Green Stick Dogwood. Medicinal use of Strawberry Bush: The seed is strongly laxative. A tea made from the roots is used in cases of uterine prolapse, vomiting of blood, painful urination and stomach aches. The bark is diuretic, expectorant, laxative and tonic. It was used as a tea in the treatment of malaria, liver congestion, constipation etc. The powdered bark, applied to the scalp, was believed to eliminate dandruff. An infusion of the plant has been used to stimulate menstruation and so should not be used by pregnant women.
