Calostoma Lutescens a stalked puffball, common name 'Lattice Puffball', most likely from the 'latticed' stalk. This species does have an edible stage but that is early in its development while it is still under ground. By the time it emerges it is generally thought too tough for consumption. I have found younger specimens and the little 'star' on top is often bright red and very pretty.

Wonder if they are common to my area. I don't venture out of my own yard enough to find many common species. I have seen a few different varieties in my own acre, but am not brave enough to eat them because I'm not sure enough that they are safe to eat. I do love mushrooms that are available in the grocery store though!!

I do love mushrooms that are available in the grocery store though!! Extreme caution is advised before eating ANY mushroom, even those commercially grown or sold through produce outlets. ALL mushrooms contain a certain amount of toxins (as do almost everything we ingest) but the body is robust and can deal with tolerable levels. What is my/your tolerable level? No one knows. It is advisable, unless you've already eaten mushrooms in the species, to sample only a very small portion, wait to see if you have a reaction then eat more if no bad symptoms occur. Lots of fascinating info on fungi. I read about one mushroom (years ago) that is delicious and safe to eat ... unless you drink alcohol within two weeks after eating the mushroom. Then you get very sick or could even die. Those toxins stay in your system that long!
