Though the bright orange fungus appears on Eastern Red Cedar after or during a spring rain, as its name implies it has more significance on nearby apple trees. The fungi has no or little effect on the cedars but spores alight on apple trees and cause a 'rust' to form on both the leaves and the fruit. Cedar Rust can be controlled on apple trees by the application of a fungicide.

Thank you Les. This stuff will ruin a good apple tree. I sometimes think of cutting all the cedars on my place.
