Ok, this is an exact copy of the post I made on the nmsnm board, but it takes a long time to transfer these photos, so I'm being lazy. Hope copy and paste works! I started my photography class on Wednesday! ;D First assignment... Take (at least) 100 landscape photos. Submit your best 5 to the instructor (send as an email attachment). So, which ones do you think are my best 5? #1 Framed Mountain #2 Mountain and power lines #3 Bridge and Tunnel #4 Gorge #1 #5 Gorge #2 (lighter) #6 Gorge #3 (slightly different angle) #7 Flower #8 Spillway over moss-covered wall #9 Stairs #10 Waterfall from East #11 Waterfall from West It was around sunrise when I took the spillway and mountain pictures, but it was dark, rainy and overcast when I took the waterfall and gorge pictures. I thought I did ok for the opportunity I had (it was almost 6 at night when I started taking the first pictures, and had to cut most because of water spots on my lens--even with an umbrella). My dad's comment: "The Gorge gives so many photo opportunities, a little light and these could be outstanding photos" So, I guess he's not impressed by them, but he's seen some of my better work. Don't have much time to get great photos before the class, especially since it's going to be a stormy weekend (so no "little light")... Good thing I gave up trying to please my parents years ago

The water falls are spectacular, but those first couple of shots of the mountains are very powerful. I love the way you framed the first with the tree branch. I'm sure that there might have been more detail in the shots with more light, but you used composition well to your advantage. I don't know if these are copped, but the content in each seem complete and the scenes well done. It's been tough here for almost a year trying to get good photos. It has rained almost none stop since last Sept. You've done very well and I've enjoyed the set. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks I love to try to frame things with natural surroundings (like the tree branches). The mountains and the spillway are cropped, bridge and tunnel just a sliver was cropped out. I had to crop the bridge/tunnel one to get rid of a sliver of white fence on the left (the bridge went from rock to white painted wood, and the right hand side had a sign), but, if I got closer to take those out of the picture, I couldn't get the tops of the trees. The spillway was similar--lots of ugly conduit on the bottom, and a handrail on the top. I couldn't zoom in on the mountain at the time (just got my zoom lens ) so maybe I can get a better shot next time. Almost every single picture I took with the flash had highly visible water spots (you can still see some in the gorge photos). I try to set myself up to get the best composition I can. Usually that means walking into mid-calf high water in the creek (my shoes are still soaked!!), or laying on my back or stomach to get the right angle. I just make sure I wear older clothes and have dry ones in the car for when I'm all done

I do that too! I've even watched for a break in traffic and lain, (laid?) on my belly in the highway! You be careful now, I wouldn't want to lose either of us. You #7 shot, the little flower, has really good focus. The Tamron lens I'm still trying to use blurs the outside of the frame more that the lens you used seems to. I like flowers, critters, nature, but I'm interested in learning more about lenses, cameras, tricks, tips too. Your flower is a good shot.
