Hi Tiki, yes it is a perfect match for the D5100. I had it on my D5100 until I got the D7100.

Whatever lens you choose Tiki, I strongly recommend a lens with vibration reduction (VR). It's also called image stabilization (IS). If a lens doesn't have it, it's very hard to hold a camera still enough so that you don't get motion effects (blurry) pics.
