This is a pretty early spring woodland flower here. I always love to see it bloom as it foretells the coming morel mushroom season!

Name probably comes from the plant having a very hefty almost tuberous root that has sap that looks a lot like blood when you cut or bruise it. It has that in the stem too. It is a useful plant. Back on the farm we would dig the root, chop a little in the dogs food to worm them. It has other medicinal uses too.
