Ran by the office yesterday, 01-27-17, and these oyster mushrooms were growing on a maple right outside! I was lucky to spot them when I did. Temperatures were dropping and they were just beginning to freeze. I harvested them just in time. I estimated at least a 5 pound collection. I was wrong. I cleaned them and had a couple of pounds of stems and debris that I tossed. I still had 5 large quart baggies weighing at least a pound after frying them. That's why I'm here in 'Preserving, Storing'. Over the years learning with morel mushrooms, I've found that most mushroom, lightly floured then browned (ready to eat) will keep a long, long time, bagged properly and stored in your freezer ... if you can keep from eating them! The bags of prepared shrooms can be thawed then added to most anything, soup, fried potatoes, or just reheated in a skillet and eaten as a side to steak or any main course dish. Perfect!

That's quite a haul Sam. I wish I was confident enough to do that. Have you read up on dehydrating things in the oven? I have a little home dehydrator and it words well. We just used some peas from 2011..

Yes, I have some mushrooms I've already dried. I much prefer the method of cooking them first. I can thaw a package and just heat then and eat them, or thaw them and add them to most any dish. I have a dehyderator, but the reconstitution process takes about as long as frying/freezing and then you still have to cook 'em.

You got that right. The reconstitution process is a pain.

Thanks Samantha. Mushroom are pretty easy, they don't run very fast.

I love a good mushroom. I can eat them on their own or with some bacon and eggs. Not sure what an Oyster Mushroom would taste like, but I like the usual mushrooms you get in a supermarket; not so happy they don't seem to ever have a very good use by date though - I guess that's what you get with fresh produce.
Oh yeah, almost forgot - great shots!

Thank you BorrowMad. I like being able to harvest a few mushrooms now. I only started my studies on edibles a few years ago. It has been a fantastic new hobby to go along with my hiking and photography.
