I love this old log. I check it often. I can almost always find some kind of mushroom growing on it, Oyster, Dryads's Saddle ... this time it's a new flush of Wood Ear. Once known predominately by the name 'Jew's Ear' this fungi is now more popularly called 'Wood Ear'. It's very soft in texture when fresh and has a pretty bland taste on it's own. It's best uses are in soups or filler in other dishes where it takes on some flavor from the foods it's cooked with.
