These are a little different. They're small puffballs that have more of a stem than most. They also grow with a thick 'skin' which peels away to reveal a colorful mark where, when dry, the puffball will develop a hole for the spores to be 'puffed' out.

Good Shots Sam. I sometimes have Giant Puffballs in m garden ,last one was half eaten before I could before I could get it. not see these though.Giant puffballs taste eggs.

samantha, I'm not sure on these. As they mature the outer coating turns to slime and are not very appetizing to look at. les, we have the giant puffballs. They're a pretty good edible. I take out huge slices like a slice of bread and just brown them slightly in a skillet with butter.
