No matter what name you apply, steer clear of this beautiful snow white mushroom. Eat one of these and you will most likely die! This mushroom is very common to southern West Virginia and accounts for the most deaths from mushroom poisoning.

Is there a mushroom that people confuse it with? Yes, there are several 'parasols' which are edible with the same general characteristics.

If you eat a small amount of poisonous mushrooms will a person die? It depends on the type and strength of the toxicity, the amount consumed and the tolerance or resistance of the person that eats it. A very small portion can be fatal from some mushrooms for some people. Others can eat some mushrooms listed as poison with no ill affect. Some are not deadly for all but will usually cause severe stomach distress, cramps, vomiting, diarrhea etc. As posted a few days ago, I researched Boletus Sensibilis thoroughly. It is poison or toxic to some people (not usually fatal). Some people can eat it with no ill affect. I cooked a small amount VERY well done, ate a small portion and had no ill affect. I ate a little more and had no issues. Next day I prepared two whole caps, ate them, enjoyed them and had no reaction. I'm one of the lucky people that can harvest and enjoy this mushroom. Harvesting mushrooms is a study. I've read of one mushroom, can't remember the name, that is perfectly safe to eat and tastes very good BUT it stays in your system and if you consume ANY alcohol in a two week period after eating the mushroom ... you die! Great caution should ALWAYS be taken when harvesting and eating ANY mushrooms. You should NEVER rely on unreputable sources of information ... like me. I have just studied mushrooms for about 5 or 6 years and know VERY LITTLE about them.
