I hope you'll join me over the next couple of days as I harvest some nuts from my place at Brooks. First offering today is Chestnuts! The Asian cultivated chestnut is all we have now. It is reminiscent of the nearly forgotten American Chestnut. That species was lost to a blight in the 40's. There is work being done to bring them back. The nuts themselves lay protected inside this prickly burr. Few of my sets will not include this busy body. Gracie is inspecting a chestnut that I removed from the burr. Yep, she ate it! Chestnuts: More on these little treasures later Once out of the prickly burr and then the thick hull taken off, there's a lot of return for your effort in a chestnut. And again, yup, she ate it. Gracie loves many nuts, fruits and berries. I always share. I never try to force her to eat anything. I offer and most often she loves the wild edibles from the field. Told you there'd be more on that hand full of chestnuts! Roasted on the old wood cook stove at Brooks. Folks if you haven't had roasted chestnuts you're missing a real treat!!!
