In keeping with this little foraging for nuts series, today will be Butternuts or White Walnuts. They taste totally different from Black Walnuts. The taste is very pleasing though. Butternuts are longer than round but still have that hard shell that requires a hammer to crack open. The wood from the Butternut tree is not as common as that of the Black Walnut by has a very pleasing, warm texture when used for tone wood for stringed instruments like the dulcimer. Butternuts grow on the tree with a soft outer hull like Black walnuts. This hull turns black with age after the nuts fall from the tree. Note the elongated shape as opposed to the more round Black Walnuts from yesterday. Inside the softer outer hull is the very hard, thick shell that takes a hammer to crack to get at the kernel inside. And here's the delicious treat once you crack 'em open! Gracie's first Butternut (the tree had not born nuts for the last 4 years). Yep, she loved it!
