The Beech Nuts are not ripe yet but once the Blue Jays find them I may not get another chance to do a series on them. Here they are on the tree. This is the outer husk or shell with the Beech Nuts inside. Here are the two nuts inside. They're green now but turn brown when they ripen. The kernel is inside these three cornered hulls. Here I've removed one nut from the outer husk. These are small nuts but very tasty. Almost all animals and birds love them. Finally, here is the kernel or fruit. In this photo it is still soft and immature. As it ripens it firms up and somewhat resembles the kernel in a sunflower seed in size and texture. I'll try to get a better photo of the kernel once they're ripened a bit ... if the critter don't gobble them all up first.
