Summer 1976 this is what it was like in my area
If you don't Remember it here is what it was like.
From May to October the Sun shone almost constantly. So much so the that the reservoirs and rivers died up
So we were asked to save water where we could.
we were advised to put a brick in the cistern and have a bath with a friend.
Kent was like a Mediterranean resort .Areas of large grass land had cracks in the surface you could have push your hand in-between the gaps.
On 7th May in Royal Tunbridge Wells the tempriture was 82F and at the end of June it was above 90F.
this was the worse Drought since 1727 when record started.
School had lessons outside.
Biddenden had no rain at all in June
Kent became as dry as timber so the firefighters were stretched to the limit.
Some of the places hit were the amusement arcade at Herne Bay ,Giles Furniture store in Chatham, Reeds Paper Mill Aylesford, Fort Amyths Chatham and Lydd Rifle range where the ammunitions were exploding .and the nuclear power Station at Dungeness the reactors were turned off because of the danger of the over head hightention wires
The Government appointed Denis Howell Minister of Drought. After they declared Kent a state of Drought.
I would like to have seen his rain dance as September was the wettest month on record

We had a drought in that period too. It was supposedly caused by a weather system they call El Nino. Grass died, trees died and it was HOT!
