Fergus Ankorn(Smiler)
Fergus Ankorn ended up im the British Military Hospital in Singapore.
in 1942 he was dying from wounds .He was vaguely aware that patants were
being marched out to be shot.
He still had nightmares about it years late.He remembered that the bedridden
men were being bayneted to death he held a pillow over his head.
He heard the death cry from the man in the bed next to him.
He would have nightmares about this the rest of his life.
He ended in Chamgi Prison where 50,000 men in into 4 barracks .
he then end up in Thailand where the guards were crue and the place
was fithy, men sufering from malnutrition and dysentery.
His family were told he had been killed. They learned that he was
alive as bland as official Japanese Government card, issue to all
prisoners, that explain he was in good heath and eating well.
but he had used pitmans short hand to tell them.
he had kept the card.
Fergus ankorn was the first man from Sevenoaks to be called up.
in September 1945 and nine other were rounded up by the guards to be shot
the young man just five stone was expecting to be shot.
at about 20 minutes their blindfolds were taken off and told the war was over

The atrocities of war are never understood unless you have lived them. I've seen many gruesome photos but they do not come near to the despair suffered by victims, prisoners and war veterans.
