Well, guess who dropped some *cough* a lot *cough* of money today...
Maybe I'm set for a little while now (yeah, right...)
I've been wanting a telescoping lens, so picked up a 55-300 lens today. And a polarizing lens (or two...plus a reducer). And, since my gear no longer fit in the child's Toy Story lunch box I was using as a camera bag, I finally gave in and got a nice camera bag backpack. My checking account is a little lighter today, but can't wait to play some more.
On the way home I stopped at some waterfalls again and walked into the creek to get some good shots, but the light was already down (very rainy day today), so not sure how they'll turn out. I decided against going over the logjam since it was almost dark, and the logs would be slippery, and I was alone (we've had someone get killed trying to get over them, it's from a flood almost 20 years ago, and the logs are unstable).
Anyway, my checkbook is "a bit" lighter, but I'm really looking forward to using the new lens, just haven't been able to get close enough to some of the stuff I've wanted to.
Might go back out tomorrow, but it's supposed to be pretty stormy, we'll see how it looks.

I'm guessing that you got the Nikkor 55-300. That's the exact lens I'm considering. I simply can't afford the 18-300 and had narrowed it down to between the 55-300 and the 70-300 (both with internal drive motor). I have the Nikon D5100 and it does not have an AF motor in the camera itself. I'm really looking forward to some pics from your new lens. I'm so hap... phiiiit .... JEALOUS!

That was it I tried out a couple, and one I loved was $1400!? Can't do that right now, so the 55-300 it is. I don't have a tripod, so that VR really helps me. I think a tripod will be the next purchase, but I'll see if I can get that used. I've bought two lenses now, a Nikkor 12-24 (I bought this one used, saved a ton of money, it's a great lens) and the 55-300. The wide lens was to get better shots of waterfalls and mountains. I have the D3200, so it doesn't have the AF motor in the camera either. I wish we still had a camera store in town! It's hard for me to order stuff like this on-line, since I like to play with them and feel them out first. So, for now, I'm traveling to "the big city" to get things. Would be nice if I could just stroll through a couple times a month to catch the good stuff when it's there, but maybe I save money this way...

Same here, small town, no camera store (sales or repair). I depend heavily on friends for advice and online reviews. If we get this site going, we may start a review section and post what we like/dislike about cameras and equipment that we have actual experience with. I'll be very anxious to hear how your 55/300 does, anxious for picture too.

I should be able to test out the 55/300 tomorrow. I'm being lazy today and staying where it's dry and warm I joined the local camera club on Monday, so I'm really hoping as people get to know me and "my style", they'll have some advice for me. We are having a weekend-long photography convention next weekend and I can't wait. Several speakers and several subjects. Also want to get in on a field trip or two.

Any neat stuff you learn and care to share would be most welcome here. If there are novices that need a place to park ... invite them to visit here. They'd be most welcome and it would help to have the activity here as well. Hope you have a good chance to use that new lens today!
