Canterbury
1948 council planning fpr blitz site.
During the war 1939-1945 a large area of Canterbury was blitz destroyed the main shopping area.
The council almost immediately stated planning the rebuilding of the area.
After the raid all that survived was Woolworths ,Marks and Spenser's and the ruined Tower of St Georges Church.
for the 6 years the area had grown Willow herbs and Buddleia there were open cellars and a few and archaeological digs.
The Deanery was being repaired the cloisters still showed the destruction.
1943 not even a year after Hitler's bombing raid ,plans to rebuild the shopping centre that around a third had been destroyed
Dr Charles holden was appointed as consultant planner to prepare the redevelopment of the shopping area with Hugh Wilson ,the city's sarvayer.
There plan was approved this included modified ring road ,but after many argument and conferences.
They left it.
John Boyle ,the town clark with otherers had formed a Citizens Defence Association .
Their aim was to fight to the death as they considered the plan would destroy the traditional character of Canterbury.
The owners of the land it was agree it was an injustice to them.
The mayor Charles Lefever is thought to have died from the strain of multicable elections That followed all the
councillors who were for the Holden were defeated.
It took 3 years before the Council ,the Citizens Defence Association ,the Chamber of Trade and the Ministry of Planning and Transport before that they could agree.
33 acres were set aside as a desiccated area
