I have some in the yard. They've been there for years. The sod probably holds them back some. These could get frozen if they are from a greenhouse. I'll have to see what comes up if anything.

Just as the sun was coming up this morning I broke ground on the herb garden part of my project. I got along better than I had expected. I was able to get two courses of stones laid by noon. The day warmed just enough to thaw the ground on top and the mud just got too slippery to work anymore today. The herb bed will only get stones on the front and the two sides. That will allow me to add courses and extend the bed up the hill as I can. To the right of the herb garden (looking up the hill) I have planned to put in a large bed of red poppies in remembrance of our veterans. Above the herb garden and poppy patch will be another terrace for flowers for the bees and butterflies. Gracie is my helper. She holds 'em down while I tamp 'em in!

Thanks Les. She's a lot of company if nothing else. She loves being outside and played all morning.

Thank you Magix. I got that big brush pile burned today and sowed some lettuce seed. I know it's too early but the seeds were cheap and lettuce is pretty hearty.

I got that big ol' brush pile burned yesterday and YES I did sow some lettuce seed. I know it's too early but I had some on hand and I'll sow more each time we get a break like this in the weather until spring and time to plant.

Thank you Magix. I'm hoping it looks better as things begin to green up this spring.

Got some Daffs and Allium bulbs in Friday. Then some onion sets on Saturday. I'd only planned one row of onions but they had such a nice package with three different kinds of onions in one box that I went with them. They're for 'green' onions (I like the tops in salads and stirfry) so they should be gone by the time it's warm enough to plant other herbs in the bed.

I was starting out to try and hand dig the poppy bed yesterday. I thought of dad's old roto tiller sitting down by a shed here. It's well over 40 years old and has dug up many acres of ground. It had not been started since the spring of 2015. I thought I might give it just one try. I put in some fresh gas, cleaned the old spark plug and shot just a sniff of carburetor cleaner down the breather ... second crank, it started! I scratched up the poppy patch and did a little more on the lettuce patch and sowed more lettuce seeds. Gracie played nearby all afternoon so I didn't have to stop and check on her which saved me a lot of time. You can see part of a bone in her mouth, she finds them and uses them as toys. Til now, the flower beds have been pretty linear so I'm making the bed for the lenten roses curved and interlocked. The stones you see are not final, just laying out the beds. It will take a lot more stones too. They have to be built up, layered. Then the beds will need extra top soil. I need to get this done as I can plant the lenten rose seeds as soon as they arrive. That should be in just a few days. I was pleased with how much Gracie and I got done. I was very tired though so dinner came from a can last night

Finished the stone for the curved beds today. Just need to fill 'em with topsoil now and they'll be ready when the seeds get here!
