I got started on a long anticipated project yesterday. I want to turn a rather steep hillside (my back yard) into a terraced garden of sorts for honey bees, Monarch butterflies and humming birds. I hope that other little creatures will benefit as well. Since a large, out of place stone had bothered me for years anyway, I figured that was the place to start by moving it several feet and 'planting' it as the corner stone for my garden. This was very labor intensive but I at least got it to where I want to set it on day one. When weather permits, I'll dig a hole/trench and stand it up. The stone was originally located at the left margin of the photo. Big rascal, several hundred pounds. Threw in this shot to show a brush pile that i built last summer to be burned in February for an early bib lettuce bed. More pictures will follow as the project progresses ... or not ..............

I got a couple more stones set yesterday. My goal is to have the first 'terrace' completed by planting time this spring. First thing in will be a row of buckwheat. The blossom is very good for bees. The buckwheat will be cut before the seeds are ripe and flowers of some type will be seeded in. The buchwheat plants are one of the best green manures for developing the soil when tilled back in.

Thank you magix. I got off to a great start. Other chores have gotten in the way for a couple of days. I can't wait to get back to it.

Rained all day today. I did get one stone hauled to the site but it was much too muddy to try to dig the hole to 'plant' it.

I got two more stones set yesterday but my luck finally ran out. The stones are much to large for me to lift so they have to be positioned just so BEFORE I slid them into the trench. The last stone yesterday slid in, then flopped on it's side. (last stone on the right) Needs rotated counter clockwise about 30 degrees. Oh well, I'll jam a wedged shaped stone in the gap, the critters won't care.

Thanks Les. I didn't get any stones set yesterday. I did get some torn up out of the ground. They're getting farther and farther away from the site now
